There are no official reports from Tinder, but in 2018 it has been estimated that there are around 57 million users globally. Currently, Tinder is available in more than 190 countries with more than 40 languages and it has been downloaded over 340 million times.

Without official demographics reports, there have been some controversies regarding the breakdown of its userbase. For example, a Global Webindex report claimed that 42% of Tinder users are in a relationship while using the app actively. Tinder has denied these statistics, putting the number around 1.7% which seems to be a more realistic number.

It is no surprise that the largest demographic group is the 18-24 years old group with around 35% of the total users. The median age of user is around 25 years for both men and women. As people age, it is less likely for them to be active on Tinder.

Tinder hasn’t been officially reporting user number since it has been part of the dating giant, Match.com. Competitors such as Bumble claim that the reason for this is that it would be really bad PR for Tinder as their gender ratio is very unfavorable compared to competitors such as Bumble.

Based on a Statista statistics, almost 80 percent of users are male on Tinder in the United States. If this estimation is close to the right number, Tinder has to work on moving this back to the 50-50 percent, as a 1-5 ratio will hurt its popularity in the long term.

In a the official company blog of Tinder it has been claimed that 80% of males on Tinder state on their profile that they are over 6 foot tall, which is way higher than national average. The company also introduced a height verification feature for tackling this issue, although later it has been revealed that it was only an April Fool’s day joke.

With its huge user numbers, Tinder is also great for finding differences in behavior between generational groups. In 2019 they found that Generation Z is more likely to share info in their bios about issues such as climate change, social justice, environment or gun control than the millennials. Millennials are way more focused on travel in their bios.

Tinder claims that the daily swipe number in the app is approximately 1.6 billion, which is around 30 swipes per daily active users on average. According to a We are Flint data source 55% of users check the app at least once a day, and around 20% of the users check it more than 1 time in a day. With this, Tinder is one of the most actively used app in the industry where Grindr the LMTQ dating app is leading the engagement game.

Number of matches in the app

Since the existence of the app, more than 20 billion matches have been registered. It is estimated that around 1 million dates are set up per week thanks to Tinder. First “Tinder children” are about to start school and their number keeps increasing. There is no estimation of how many “Tinder children” has been born.

Tinder reports that in the first 6 weeks of the year (from January 1 to February 13) active users on Tinder reaches its highest peak. They claim that the number of average swipes by users increase 100X in this period. There is also a spike in user activity among college students in the spring break period.

In 2020 the number of paying users exceeded 5.7 million users which made it the highest-grossing non-gaming app with a total revenue of 2.2 billion USD, more than apps like Netflix or YouTube. Tinder has reached this new peak by growing its number of paying customers very fast in the last couple of years. Its revenue has increased by 920% from 2014 to 2019.

This revenue growth has been driven by Tinder Gold since its introduction in Q3 2017.
